Marimekko Pouf

When we were in Palm Springs for Easter, our party –David, Marta, Dan, Keith, me, and, of course, Julia– made our way to the Trina Turk boutique on North Palm Canyon Drive.  For years Trina Turk has sold stylish clothing suitable for a Rat Pack cocktail party (in a good way), but a couple of years ago she opened a home boutique next door with the same sophisticated but sunny point of view.

When I saw this piece, my eyes lit up.  It’s in the shape of a traditional Moroccan pouf, but it’s made from vintage Marimekko fabric from Finland.  I grew up with Marimekko’s bold, cheerful prints and have remained a big fan ever since.  Many good old and new Merimekko prints are still in production and can be purchased at www.finnstyle.com, where I bought the fabric I used in Julia’s San Francisco room.)  Our friend Dan noticed my reaction and quietly bought us the piece as a gift before I even had a chance to inquire about the price (but I believe it was around $200).  Last week it took up residence in our Southampton family room.

Like many of the special items in her Palm Springs boutique, these vintage fabric poufs aren’t available in Trina Turk’s online store, but if you call they can refer you to a flickr site where they keep current photos of their store inventory.  Trina Turk Residential is located at 891 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA, and their telephone number is 760-416-2856.  A good source of Moroccan leather poufs, like the one in Julia’s New York room, is www.tazidesigns.com.
