Supermarket Floral Challenge

February 9, 2011 · 10 comments

Someday I’d love to have a great florist (and we know a brilliant one –Zeze Flowers in New York) deliver fresh flowers to the house every week.  I’d come home on, say, Tuesdays to see what beautiful seasonal creation they’d left on the dining table (and, while I’m fantasizing, in our bedrooms too).  In reality, though, we need to save florists for special occasions.  Farmers markets and flower shops are good sources for DIY arrangements, but I often don’t have time to make a special trip to pick up flowers.  I need a better everyday solution.

So here’s the challenge:  how to make something great out of the flowers available at the supermarket.  Flower arranging isn’t my long suit, though, so I need your help.  Send me your ideas and photos, and I’ll post them all.  The guidelines are simple:  everything (except the vessel) must come from an honest-to-goodness supermarket (most should be called averagemarkets) or bodega, and you must use some cut plant material.  Other than that, let your imagination run riot and inspire the rest of us cart-pushers with your creativity.

To kick things off, I put together the arrangement pictured above.  I used tulips and yellow hypericum berries and put them in a hollowed-out spaghetti squash from the produce section.  With seven tulips (above), it’s a nice desk or bedside arrangement.  With a few more stems, it could work on a small dining table.

I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
