Julia’s Window Box

February 10, 2013 · 6 comments

It was bound to be a cold, snowy, mostly indoor weekend for our outdoors-loving daughter, and so I thought I would brighten up Julia’s room with an early Valentine’s treat.  On Friday morning before the first flakes flew, I went to New York’s flower district (28th street, mostly between 6th and 7th Avenues) to get supplies to make her a flower box for her window sill.

I found this lightweight (and watertight) zinc window box at Jamali Garden Supply for about $20, which conveniently holds three standard 6-inch growers pots.  I filled it with three pots of tulips from a shop down the street and topped it off with some preserved moss.  I thought the finished product looked nice, but maybe a little serious, so I made it a bit more little girl-friendly with a band of pale pink satin ribbon.

The after-school verdict:  ”Pretty!  I like the ribbon.”

While waiting for Spring, Spring ahead with tulips in the window. I am sure it makes Julia happy when she gets up each morning rain or shine.
