It was genuinely cold outside in New York today, and the Holidays are just around the corner. Time for whiskey drinks. Here is a video about three delicious cocktails you can make all winter with just three key ingredients –rye whiskey, sweet vermouth and Angostura bitters.  (Recipes below.)  Cheers!

Recipes

Old Fashioned

1 sugar cube

3 dashes of Angostura bitters

2 oz rye whiskey

lemon peel (yellow skin only –no white pith)

Place the sugar cube (or a teaspoon of sugar) in a heavy glass.  Soak the sugar cube with 3 dashes of Angostura bitters.  Pour 1-2 teaspoons of soda water into the glass and crush the sugar cube with a muddler (or a wooden spoon).  Mix well.  Add the whiskey and plenty of ice.  Stir.  Hold the cut side of the lemon peel over the drink and squeeze it to release its fragrant oil into the glass.  Rub the rim with the lemon peel, then drop it into the glass and serve.

Manhattan

2 oz rye whiskey

1 oz sweet vermouth

2 dashes of Angostura bitters

lemon peel (again yellow skin only –no bitter pith) or brandied or maschino cherry to garnish

Fill a mixing glass or a shaker with ice.  Add the rye, vermouth and bitters and mix or shake well.  Strain into a coupe or pour over ice.  Garnish with the lemon peel or a cherry.

Harvest Punch

4 oz sparkling apple cider

1.5 ounces rye whiskey

.5 ounce sweet vermouth

1 dash of Angostura bitters

Slice of apple to garnish

Put all ingredients into a tall glass filled with ice.  Stir, garnish with the apple and serve.

This drink also works well made in quantity and served from a punchbowl.  (Chill with a single large block of ice to avoid overly diluting the drink.)
