Take Five: Summer Somewhere

January 27, 2013

I suppose I should be posting about five great wintry things, but it’s just too cold in New York even to think about it.  This week I’m going with denial.

Sydney Opera House.  Designed by the Danish architect Jorn Utzon and built between 1957 and 1973, this expressively beautiful building has become a much loved symbol of the city of Sydney (where it’s high summer right now).  And nobody seems to care anymore that it was delivered ten years behind schedule and fourteen times over budget.

Trina Turk Waterflow Pillow.  Some poolside glamour for the sofa.

Knoxville Summer 1915.  James Agee’s memories of a childhood summer, movingly set to music for voice and orchestra by Samuel Barber.  Nostalgia without sentimentality. There are many good recordings, but this by the American soprano Dawn Upshaw is probably my favorite.

Heath Shallow Salad Bowl.  A generous and versatile serving bowl made by Heath Ceramics in many beautiful color combinations.  I think we have five.

Etro Paisley-Print Silk Scarf.  A great big happy paisley (from the masters of paisley) to tuck under a lightweight jacket.
