Cookie Factory 2012, Part 1

December 16, 2012 · 4 comments

The cookie factory was in full swing this weekend.  Each year David and I (and now Julia helps a bit so she can nick cookie dough) bake and send over 60 dozen holiday cookies to friends and family all over the country.  Midway through the process (around now, actually) we feel like we should have our heads examined, but when the last box is sealed, we’re glad we made the effort to share our holiday spirit.  (See here for pictures and recipes for a previous year’s effort.)

We pack the cookies in tins that I like to decorate myself — usually with homemade stencils and spray paint (for speed) and some glitter (for fun).  I’m still working our this year’s design, and for inspiration I’ve been looking at tins from previous years.  Here’s how I made last year’s.

1.  I cut a stencil out of heavy construction paper and spray painted on the first layer of the design.

2.  A stencil for the second layer guided me as I painted on Mod Podge to receive  . . .

3.  Glitter!  (You can use slightly thinned Elmer’s glue in place of Mod Podge.)

4.  Silver glitter in the center completed the design, and a layer of spray lacquer held it all in place.

After production’s finished, I’ll post recipes and photos of this year’s cookies.

This year’s shipment is going out on Wednesday, though, so I’d better get glittering.
